Quality Manager, Technoturn, Hastings

I started at Technoturn as a Milling Shop Supervisor, until 2015/2016 when I took on the role of Senior Quality and Manufacturing Engineer, and later Quality Manager. I’m responsible for the effective running of the quality control department, regularly reporting quality performance to directors and maintaining key performance data and quality data. I am responsible for maintaining the quality performance of the company, through initiatives including improvement projects, quality clinics and weekly/daily communication.

I also ensure the smooth operation of QC first offs, 9102 FAIRS, goods receiving, final inspection, SPC, and internal auditing schedules. I am the first contact for issues/non-conformances with customer/supplier products, and conducting 8D investigations and root cause analysis when required. I work on the maintenance of Technoturn’s QMS system and processes involved, updating and working with team for continual improvements to the processes.

I started in Plastic Injection Moulding as a General Machinist, setting up and changing tooling, machines, following onto Subcontracting Precision Engineering company, supplying to various customers, including the aerospace sector. Over period of six years, I progressed from Operator within CNC milling machine to full Programmer, working with various types of materials and products.

From then, I moved to a large globally owned pump manufacturer, where during eight years, the first four were as general machinist of multi palleted horizontal milling machines, until I became a Production Engineer. During this time, I achieved a HNC in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with a distinction, and received training in project management and lean methodology.

My duties include designing, drawing, manufacturing and the purchasing of jigs, fixtures and tooling that were required for every day running of cell of 14 machines, including mills, lathes, broaching machine, manual mills etc. I work with operators and management to investigate and resolve machining/tooling issues.

I help optimise processes using lean methodology, including the use of lean tools such as 5S, SMED, AviX, DMAIC, Six Sigma and DPMO analysis. I monitor quality using statistical analysis tools, allowing for proactive assessment of the manufacturing processes. I run PROMAL projects to implement new machinery and equipment into the cell using a structured, controlled and documented methodology.

Other duties include implementing documented work and quality control instructions to ensure best practice, and to ensure standard working processes are worked to. I control the implementation of new or changed products through the cell, which would include choosing materials, machining method, arranging tooling packages with suppliers, and creating WI and QCWI to make sure best method is obtained without reduction in quality.

At Techno Group, I enjoy the open collaboration between staff at all levels. This can be lost in larger companies, so the close working relationship with staff allows for a quick resolve when things do go wrong. I also enjoy the variation of work and customers.

When I’m not working, I enjoy walking, camping, cycling, going to the gym and gaming on my PS5.

As the Quality Manager of Technoturn, I am responsible for maintaining the quality performance of the company through initiatives including 5S, improvement projects and quality clinics. My previous roles as a Milling Shop Supervisor and Production Engineer have given me a great background in applying lean methodologies including SMED, AxiX, SMAIC, Six Sigma and DPMO analysis. All of this means that I can draw on my experiences when talking to customers and collaborating with the production team to ensure that optimal product quality is delivered to all of our customers.
